A report "London: Garden City", says that home owners, inspired by celebrity gardeners, are destroying lawns and trees that are the natural habitat of animals and insects, with concrete, decking and sheds.

The chairman of the Wildlife Gardening Forum also blamed garden programmes for the studies' findings.

A ´óÏó´«Ã½ Spokesman said, "The ´óÏó´«Ã½'s broad range and depth of current gardening programmes all take gardening for wildlife seriously and biodiversity is deeply embedded in them."

Eh? Where's the broad range of programmes? Or did I blink and miss them?

I agree there is no range of gardening programmes, but also think that the "London Garden City" report is a little out of date......it's about 15 yrs since Groundforce and The City Gardener extolled such ideas. It's all wildlife habitats, water and permeable ground for car parking now.

Reported in today's Telegraph - the report describes a 12% loss of green areas in London since 1999.

The loss of green areas in london is probably less due to decking etc and more due to houses.

My mother lives in Greater London and gardens everywhere there are being turned into housing. You wouldn't believe just how many houses they can fit on what was a garden. The trend is also for large 4 bed houses with no garden (or one that is something like 2 foot by 8 foot) as the market they are catering for don't want the 'hassle' of gardening. What garden there is if often just full of weeds. One I remember seeing last year while walking her dog around the block had a smll area in the front garden by the drive for planting. Only weeds were growing and being ignored by the owners. They would regret not taking action quickly as it was full of sycamore seedlings. smiley - winkeye
