What are they?? There are trees in Monty's veg garden that are branchless trunks, with just a couple of very long horizontal branches, at the top, linking the trees. Does anybody know what they are, or why he has them like that? I would love to know; they would make great boundaries without creating shade.

Thank you, that's brilliant. You have good eyesight or a good tv; I have been freeze framing for ages and I had no idea. I don't suppose you might know whether they were done on purpose, or they outgrow there space and were chopped back? I'm not sure how you might know this, but it's worth an ask.

He was working on them at the beginning of the series and to be honest I wasn't really taking it all in-I think it is a tried and tested technique for training limes- I expect someone else can elaborate........

Yes, he showed them and told you how to maintain them in the first programme. My friend has an avenue of them, you train them as they grow. When they have attained the height you want, and the lateral branches are in the correct position, you prune them each year to keep the shape.Sorry I can't give more detail, but they're not difficult to do, if you have the space.Google "pleached limes"

Thanks to both of you, just what I needed to know. I'll see if the first programme is on i-player, and if it isn't now it should return eventually.

Tilia cordata

This kind of hedge on stilts is standard practice here in Belgium for people who want privacy without casting shade below. I've seen it done between neaighbours to make bedroom windows more private, along house frontages and also around car parks and terraces where privacy and shelter are wanted without blocking light and views.
It works very well with the tilias that Monty uses, with green or copper beech and, for heavier soils, hornbeam. I've also seen it done with Mexican bean trees which have much larger leaves.
