Isn't the salvia which they couldn't identify at Newby Hall the same as Monty Don's "Purple Spires"?
I bought one from a friend who runs a little nursery as Salvia greggii 'Navajo Dark Purple'.
Am pretty sure it's the same plant. Have got it growing in my so-called exotic garden under a near-black Gladioli. Looks fantastic.
It looked liked Salvia x lycoides, maybe too deep for 'Christine Yeo'. has a semi spreading habit
