I have just planted out strawberry plants grown from runners this year. They're substantial plants and even have flower trusses on. My question is, going on the 3 year life cycle of strawberry plants are these classed as one year old plants or are they one next summer?
Does that mean a strawberry plant doesn't produce fruit every year??
Yes, strawberry plants produce fruit every year, but are past their peak after three years and need to be replaced. My question is, are this years runners one year old plants or none year old?
According to this weeks GW your plants are babies and the best fruit will come in their second year i.e 2 years
Ps-sorry meant to say-remove any flowers that are appearing now -this wont help fruit production for next year
Your plants will be 1 next year, don't worry to much about them getting to 3 years though before replacing them because you'll find they produce that many runners each year you won't know which one's are 1, 2 or 3 years old by then.
I've found no matter how young strawberry plants are they produce whopping great big strawberries.
The first year they set flowers/fruit is year one, so yours will be one year old next summer!
Thanks to all. This years runners have set flowers/fruit but I have removed them before I planted them into their permanent bed.
Thanks Zoomer, understand what you mean, that's why I'm trying to sort out some sort of rotation system. Whether I can keep to it over the years is another matter.
