swede

    Hi i have grown swede for the first time and the swede is working its way out the ground. should I recover it over and if so how much should i cover it over by please ?

    I'm not sure whether I grew swede or turnip this year, the label at the end of the row disapeared weeks agosmiley - smiley

    They did push themselves out of the ground and continued to grow, so I just left them and had a really good harvest this weekend. The top part out of the ground went purple and their bottoms were white but they tasted fine.

    I'd say leave them alone and let them grow but I'm happy to be wrong. I'm sure someone else will follow on with better advise.

    this is quite normal for a swede or a turnip
    yellow ones are swedes white ones turnips
    unless you live in Scotland or the west country where it is the other way round

    I think it is perfectly normal for swedes to protrude from the ground. They are quite hardy, so I think you can leave them there until needed; that's how I do it anyway. If you live up north, you may want to cover them with straw or compost when it gets really cold.

    Scotland and the West Country have it right!! Its the rest of the country that dont know what a turnip is smiley - winkeye
