I used to live in Saskatoon Saskatchewan, which is named after the native berry that grows there - looks rather like a blueberry, but is redder, and sweeter and is not really a berry, belongs to the apple family. When we started our plot in Hertfordshire in 2008, I bought 2 plants from an exotic fruit place in Wales - they came as young plants about 10 cm high. The first year they just grew a bit, the second they became bushes, but no fruit. Last year we got a few berries - but this year - a bumper harvest! I can highly recommend them - they are earlier that blueberries, and much more proflific (we grow those too) - also easier to grow, and very hardy, as they would have to be to grow in Saskatchewan. You can use them just like blueberries and they wonderful crumble! I gather they are considered not suitable for sale in the UK, but I don't know if this is changing. Anyone know anything about this or are there any other growers out there?

Saskatoon plants are available for sale in the UK from a grower in Scotland. I have two plants but only planted for under two years, and no flowers so far.
    For general information see
A google search will bring up the supplier.

I was born in Sakatchewan but my family moved down east when I was a baby. They often spoke of saskatoons. I am tempted to try them. Do they also need an acid soil like blueberries? If the grow well in Herts, I guess they'd be happy in Surrey.

    Hi Honeysuckle
Sorry to take so long to reply - I only just found the site again! We have our Saskatoons in the same bed as blueberrries and they do well, though we do put down ericaceous compost. I'm not sure how well they woud do without it as I haven't tried. I expect they would grow well in Surrey and to be on the safe side put some ericaceous around them.
