Thought I'd share this.
I sowed some carrots, Early Nantes, beginning of August and they are going great guns - about 3" high now. Also, we put down some early spuds, Duke of York, about 3 weeks ago, and they are all through and looking good. Looking forward to Christmas already!
I like Early Nantes.

If this weather keeps up you will be harvesting in November ,but please keep the frost covering ready ,thats the way to do it ,Den
Good luck with the carrots, I'd love to grow some to edible size. Tried in a veg bed but no success.
This year tried in a pot and they are not growing bigger than a couple of inches under ground but watched the final episode of Beech Grove tonight and they grew carrots in a paper like container which was quite deep with what looked like sand. They had good sized carrots so it's worth a try next year.
I grew Duke of York this year, started in April got a really good crop of tasty spuds. Let us know how your Xmas spuds get on I tried last year for the first time but planted to late. They grew for a while then died back and the bag was frozen at Xmas so didn't get a crop but when defrosted in Feb there were spuds in the bag of a good size.
My Xmas delivery of spuds didn't arrive in time this year so I cancelled it.
I've some celeric in, first time so don't know how that will fare for Xmas.
Hi Zoomer
Carrots are tricky. We had great success this year - hubby made a wooden trough on stilts 6 x 3 x 4' high and filled it with gp compost and added a good bit of sand. Also, we had an old hinged shower door that we put over as a cloche. We planted Early Nantes on a tape from Lidl and they all came. Just had the last bunch this week and they were just divine. We had no luck with them in the raised beds, so I think we've cracked it. I think the seeds on a tape are great as they are well spaced, and nothing can eat them before they germinate!! Lidl do quite a few seeds on tape and they seem to be sound.
Hi, horththit,
how you thought up your user name I'll never know but I transgress,
I pulled up a few of my largest carrots today, they've been growing in a small pot since about April. They look edible but only about 3 inches long 'tops' I've srubbed them for Sunday roast tomorrow, to peel them would have left nothing to eat.
On a positive note I certainly won't be having a glut on carrots this year but there's away's next year to look forward too
I've tried seeds on tape and found them really good. I don't shop at Lidl though when do they get their seeds in?
An allotment holder friend of mine was very dismissive of his carrot crop because they'd had good tops but teeny tiny carrots. He gave me a handful and the biggest was about 1" long!
I rinsed and steamed them and they were amazingly delicious. They tasted of carrot - the big bonus when you grow your own. I wish I could have had a whole bowlful just to myself.
Size doesn't matter .

Made a similar structure myself, carrots were best ever,(mixed some vermiculite in also). Can pictures be posted on this site?
Yes pictures can be posted but sorry I don't know how to do it, I'm still trying to work out how to get photo's from my digi camera onto the computer
If you wish to post a photo follow this link
Hi Zoomer,
Lidl usually get their seeds in early Spring, so look out for whatever you need and get them, as they aren't on the shelves long here. They are both dependable and cheap!
Glad you like my username, got it off a birthday card when I was pretending to be 29 (that's nearly 30 years ago!)
