I like to grow a few sunflowers and then use the seeds for bird food, but this year it's been useless. Many heads haven't even made seed and those that did are tiny black bullets, not very nutritious.
Are there any specific varieties that give a good yield of nice fat seeds ?
This year's for me were a mix pack, so maybe that was the problem.

I like to let the birds have a go at my fat balls, but the mods don’t like me to talk about them on here.

My best producer for seeds was an old packet of sunflowers seeds by gardenline called giant singles! Bought from Aldi. Should have been sown by 2010, I got huge heads off them and loads of large seeds.
Earth walker and pastiche haven't dried very well with almost zero seeds to store for the birds. They went a bit mouldy and powdery.

I have sun flowers growing in the garden from the seeds from a feeder that I put out for the birds, there's one that's over 7 feet tall and the flower head is just opening the rest about 4 of them are in full flower and they are all different so needles to say I shall let the birds do the same again next year but we'll have a race as I have 6 packets of sunflowers in the shed for planting next year, will be interesting to see who has the best ones me or the birds

I cut the heads off mine a few weeks before my jollies and put them in vases indoors so I could reap the benefit of them, figuring they would be past their best by the time I got home, then put these in the shed to dry off.
Whilst on my jollies a neighbour in France, judging by the number of sunflowers they have in their garden must let them self seed. They were in various stages of growth, some dying back. The number of birds feeding off them was quite amazing. There was one bird breed big brother said was quite rare in England, only one pair seen in the Lakes up until a couple of years ago now there are three pairs.
'Makes a mental note to find out the breed'
