This spring I fancied growing grafted toms but did not like paying £3 a plant so with help from the Internet and Moles Seeds I grew my own. The lady at the seed supplier was very helpful and recommended Arnold as root stock and some plastic clips to hold the graft. It all went well, a bit fiddly and my only failures were caused by finger trouble. I grafted a variety of the normal toms on top and kept similar plants as a check. I think I was a bit mean on the size of my pots and am not sure I got the watering and feeding as good as I might have.
Was it a success? Well - the grafted plants take a big set back, so catching up with those which did not have their heads chopped off takes a long time. we've had a Welsh summer, wet and not enough sun, it's my first year of trying ( and my 4th. year as a gardener ) . That all sounds like excuses but it's hard to say it was a great success both grafted and un-grafted have done fairly well, an earlier start would have been better and my skill level generally needs to improve. It was fairly cheap way to play at it and probably worth another try next year.
