Flushed with the success of our onion and garlic crop planted this spring, I decided to put 100 red set and 50 yellow in 10 days ago to over winter. They already have one inch green shoots, is that ok?
The second question is are there any drawbacks to planting garlic cloves from the supermarket ?

Garlic. They may have been sprayed with shoot suppressant. Unlikely but possible. They also may be a variety that thrives in a warmer climate than ours.

I did try with s/market shallots, but I think they had been treated.

I had a very good supermarket strain for many years. While we were between houses I entrusted some cloves to an aquaintance, expecting to receive some bulbs back, but I think she misunderstood because I never saw them again !!

Plant some, you have little to lose.

I've never had a problem with supermarket garlic. I use it, and always get enough return to last most of the year. Of course, some bulbs don't do so well, and some go mouldy in storage, but I didn't get better results using expensive "proprietary" strains in a trial.

Is it ok to use garlic cloves you've grown yourself or better to buy new one's.

Thank you, I will use some of this yrs crop of garlic and the organic garlic I bought from Morrisons today.
I take it that the onion shoots are normal.

Charlies are selling autumn planting garlic bulbs for £2.99 for three, the bag I bought had 37 cloves. I planted them with 10 organic cloves and 10 non organic from the supermarket + 5 cloves of this years crop.

At least the envy I have got for successful growers of Garlic and Onions is GREEN.

I have got very little else to show, except successful ornamental Alliums, bought as mature bulbs, and nicely split and replanted too in September.

I've chopped up the shop garlic and planted the little bits. smiley - devil
