Had a really good supply of Swiss Chard all summer and though the plants are still producing, some leaves have mildew. Is it OK to still eat these after washing the mildew off or discard? Thanks.

Ours had this a bit - we didn't try eating it but picked off the affected leaves and the newer ones are coming through clear. I think it started because the weather was so dry and hot, as it has never happened before.

This may not help but as not many posters have replied I suspect no one has been faced with the issue of deciding whether to eat chad with mildew washed off.

I was never a fussy eater until I started growing stuff in the garden but after saying that eat most things I grow if it looks 'normal' and have been fortunate in that most stuff looks like the picture on the seed packet.

Everything is given a good wash and I'm happy to eat salad after washing off the odd tiny little creature but would not eat lettuce leaves with lots of holes in or serve it up to friends. I'm sure there would be nothing wrong with it but I wouldn't want to eat it.

Same goes for your swiss chad, there may not be anything wrong with it once the mildew has been washed off but I wouldn't eat it, put it down to experience, find out what caused the mildew and if you like chad try to grow a resistant variety next time.
