I have two red filberts, now in their second year in my garden, and growing well. Last year, they produced catkins in the autumn, which fell off in the spring. I thought this was simply because they were newly planted and therefore a little confuzzled.
Today, I noticed that one is producing catkins again - in early October. Is this normal for red filberts? If not, what should I do to get it to recognise the seasons?
I would say what you are witnessing is another anomaly brought on by the mixed bag of weather we have had this year.
For example I have a Cherry tree that thinks it is spring now!.......it is in flower!
God only knows what we can expect next year as plants reorganise themselves after the this years weather.
As I was saying the other day to a friend, we had summer weather in spring and autumn ( April and last week) and we had spring and autumn weather in between!
So is it any wonder the plants are mixed up.
It might be said; the weather has gone "nuts"
