My garlic is about 4" high and I am worried the severe frost might damage them come the winter. Should I fleece them up or ridge them up to protect them I wonder. I did lose half of my crop last season
They are pretty hardy. If you do lose them you can always plant some more in the early Spring. If you saw the programme on garlic last Wednesday on the ´óÏó´«Ã½ you will have seen that it has been grown in the UK since Roman times.
We grow garlic in pots ever year, and so far, in spite of some very low temperatures have not lost any to weather. They are not protected in any way, except for the other plants that are near the pots - and the back of my car which is quite near their pots!! Guess they are pretty hardy then. Come to think of it, the wild garlic never succumbs, though I am sure there are a good number of people, in e.g Guernsey, who wish it might.

Yes, I did see the prog on garlic. How do you get to buy Wight garlic from west of Ireland?
I live on the south coast and grow the solent varieties. They survived being covered in snow for the last two winters without any noticable effect.
I live in south Yorkshire , we had a harsh winter and my crop came through, no protection at all
Mine are waitrose specials and they are coming through nicely all cut up. About a dozen now, but hopefull more than 36 sliced pieces of garlic cloves, sliced at the same angle as the clove itself.
I'll do some more garlic chopping in the early winter and see how it goes.
About 20 now, far more than if I had just stuck in the separated cloves. I think I succeeded in splitting to about 36 pieces casually chopped up, although segmentally at the same incline.
So I shan't be wasting so much money on Garlic at the supermarket every time I want to plant some in the garden.
They may be split much, much smaller as small as the "bulbils" without again wasting effort allowing the plant to go to see to obtain the latter..

Interesting Papa Nopsis, although I'd wait until you harvest your crop before proclaiming it a success.
