Does anyone grow ginger? I use a lot of ginger and wondered how easy it is to grow.
I've tried with little (or rather NO) sucess. Tried planting a whole root, just the growing tip straight and with hormone rooting powder.
I'll be waiting for hints when you succeed ! Cheers, Tony.
Ginger is a tropical plant and needs heat, heat and moisture!! Therefore not really suitable for us in the UK. I have tried it in an unheated greenhouse but it is not worth the effort. You need a bit of root with an "eye" ready to sprout.
Same experience here. A bit of top growth but no root to speak of.
it should be easy enough to grow as a pot plant
it is a very attractive plant and is widely grown as a flower in Asia
unfortunately you are unlikely to have much result with ginger purchased here for culinary use as it is scalded when lifted for this purpose
this is to stop it shooting before it gets to the consumer
Try a garden centre but do ensure you get the right variety although on chinese markets there are many different sorts sold

KEEP TRYING
Thanks all.
Does anyone has experience of growing curcuma? I have been given one as a present, day time I put it in the conservatory to have more light and take it in the house at night put it in the hall away from the radiator. However the leaves are gradually turning yellow and can be easily pull out. I water it about twice a week by puting water in the tray. I am afraid it may died during the winter.
