My butternut squash plants are doing really well and the fruits that have come up are beginning to fatten. However I was at Beasham last weekend and they were pulling up their plants already. I was planning on leaving mine until the squash stopped coming. Should I stick with this plan or cut the nearly ready squash now and pull up the plants now?
It is very late in the season to have squash still on the plants outside. Unless you are in a very warm area, eg western cornwall, there could be a frost at any time and that would ruin them. As will sitting in the damp or cold nights even without frost.
I would say cut them now and put on your sunniest window sill to dry off / cure a bit. They may not be quite ripe but should still be edible, just wont keep very long.
