I was thinking about getting a grow light to start off onions this year as I want to grow a big one (or maybe more) just for the fun of it....then I came across this grow light garden.

I like the look of this because it has a tray under it and the light can be moved up and down away to and from the plants...as I have four kids space is limited and this will fit nice on the window sill.

Any one out there own one or have had one.....please don't hold back let me know what you think of it.

Dave, coming from the North East where huge leeks onions and almost every other kind of vegetable are grown for money making shows, I never ever saw a grow light used.
The growing of large Veg is down to good husbandry, the nurturing of seedlings plants and finally standing by your huge plants overnight with a big stick.
With the cost of fuel going through the roof, the green goddesses making green planet trumpet calls plus the cost of the gear to grow one large onion which will be fairly tasteless then I do not see the point.
Start off with seed you know produces large bulbs, the local allotment group will know, then sow and bring on the biggest and best using light reflectors, white painted cardboard boxes, tinfoil, a mirror? plus plenty of TLC which means spending more time with the onion than you do with the wfe, girlfriend, or any sort of social life and for what?
I had the biggest tree in the road on my front, had to cut it down before it put its roots through the house and out the back, Now I grow snowdrops! "oh yes and mushrooms on the lawn from the old roots" every action so they say has a reaction???
    The best of luck,
    Frank.

Hi Frank, thanks for your reply mate.

I have done a spot of reading on the growing of big veg and can see what your saying about it taking up loads of time, money and life and with four kids I don't have much of any left.

I don't want to grow them for the show, I just want to grow some big veg for the fun of it...the kids want to take it into show and tell at school, but its just to look at and then eat.

    Thanks again.
