....my veg plot that is. I sowed green manure in September thinking I'll dig that in the spring as per instructions. After a good start and the mild weather it's been overwhelmed by chickweed it would make sense to dig in it now......no ?

Do you really want chickweed all over the place next season? Try & remove as much of THAT as possible as you go. J.

My allotment has been over run almost with chickweed-But I have a large patch of Green manure-Rye grass and red clover-sown thickly -and no chick weed on it.
I have strimmed it twice and may leave it till the clover has flowered.
In your case I would dig it in -I find the weed will just keep spreading unless it gets very icy for a long spell

I agree I have no realistic hope of eradicating now what ever I do it is so very persistent, it seems to go very quickly from something very small to overrun quickly
Turn you back and it's multiplied beyond my capacity to weed it out I realize it's soft and pulls out (breaks off and regrows) easily enough it's just so fast too fast for the time I've got.
It is profoundly not my worst problem those being tomato blight, cucumber mosaic virus, aphids, bugs, foxes, cats etc

And we STILL garden! Good luck, J.
