A lot of the answer to this depends on your facilities and location.
In the South of England with a heated greenhouse you'd stand a better chance than up here in the North East.
The first things I always start off are broad beans and peas, indoors at first then transfering to my unheated greenhouse or cosy shed beside the big windows but I still wrap them up in fleece on cold nights
Personally it's far too early for me to consider starting anything off until Feb/ March - not enough daylight so seedlings are weak and leggy - but if you have a mist unit or propagator you're in a better position
At this stage I'm planning the year ahead and browsing the seed catalogues

I admire your enthusiasm but;
I suggest you read the overview on this page ; and take it from there.
If you have the facilities, the remainder of the page will give you some ideas.

Hi there Tee Gee...just wanted to ask you something about your web page/page's....
When you write the info do you take into account the place in the UK/world people live and if they have the right stuff to sow the seeds or grow the plants on?
I'm asking because I found your site a good "point of call" when I first started getting to grips with gardening and still do sometime's, but I just read your overview and it got me thinking whats right one mite not be for the other.

I am also excited about getting started and I have been growing pea shoots on my window sill to stop myself from doing anything silly.

I've read the other replies and think they're absolutely right to suggest just planning and browsing now - I learnt that the hard way. BUT my grown up children think it's funny that I still stick the occasional nice fat carrot top in a saucer of water on the window ledge to watch the beautiful foliage grow, tending it as carefully as the most precious of plants. My granddaughter also loves this now. There's always mustard and cress, too. Won't be long until spring and we can get our hands on the garden again! Happy days.

It's traditional to sow onion seeds in January, for large onions at least, you can sow them until March.
I always do, it's so good to watch them grow. You can get a lot more varieties than are offered as sets. I grew Kelsea last year and would recommend them.
Happy, and fruitful new year,
Lottie

Won't be long before you can start to sow chilli seeds, most of the hot varietys take as-long as 60 days to kick in !!!

You could sow Norway spruce christmas tree seeds now, they like a period of cold weather to get started

Hello cupcake,
As the amount of light and day length is key to successfuk germination can I persuade you to wait until Feb? Even sowing in April for most veg will be fine as the growth catches up as light levels and night temp increases.
If you are desperate to get started (as we all are) how about getting some chicken pellets (10kg for £7) applying that to your beds and containers then 'hiding' it from pets and foxes under a layer of compost. If you want to be energetic prick drainage holes into soil with a gardening fork.
Digging trenches for greedy plants like beans or sweet peas is a good way of burning off mince pie insulatiion. Current thinking is that only light digging and raking is necessary for most soils if drainage is sorted. The organisms and fungi that live in the upper levels of soil breakdown the nutrients that the root hairs need. Let them do their job to release the nutrients into the top 25cms of soil and save your back.
That should keep you busy through a few weekends and your garden will repay you ten times over. Slow and steady does it cupcakes
