Morning everybody. I have a chicken-related question and thought there used to be somewhere to ask questions about backyard livestock. Can anybody direct me please?
There are chicken keepers on here who may be able to help-what is the question ?
or there are plenty of on-line forums as well.
Thanks for your reply. I tried chickenvet but nobody seems to be home. I have half a dozen hens who we really regard as pets and they have completely free access to garden and field. One of them recently seems to be very bottom-heavy as it were - she waddles as though she has a very full nappy and can't keep up with the others although she is bright eyed and seems to be alert and have a good appetite. Since one or two of them have started laying again, I am just wondering whether she is 'egg-bound' if there is such a thing, or even constipated? I'm afraid the cost of taking her to the vet makes it out of the question but would obviously like to help her if I can, so would be really grateful for any suggestions or advice and thanks in advance.
Try the grow your own site mate, look on the forms till you find...."rule the roost" ask there as there are loads of people with hen's duck's and other birds.
Sorry I can't help in any other way.
Whatsthemarrow...
Thanks BigDave. I have found it and posted on there.

There is a chicken thread on the Archers site. It's on the Village Hall board.
I, I have hens but don't recognise the symptoms. Do you know about the Practical Poultry website with their forum? I find it very useful.
Try 'allotment and vegetable gardening'. It may be a 'rival' site but it is always infested with chuck infested questions and comments.
Cheers, Tony.
allotment.org.uk website is very good, answers very quickly.
You could try inserting a finger to see if there is an egg up there.

Sad end to the story. I took her to the vet and she had to be put down. Originally he thought she had a tumour, but he did a PM just for his own interest afterwards and it turned out to be something call egg peritonitis, when an egg breaks inside the hen, then others gradually build up behind it etc. There was absolutely nothing he could have done, He said that once we get into the full laying season all hen-keepers should watch out for a hen which suddenly stops laying. You should feel the lower abdomen and if there seems to be something solid get her to the vet pdq.
I have never come across it before and I have had hens on and off for a number of years.
It was all v sad.
But thanks to everybody who tried to help.
