I planted a second crop in Sept last year, I still have about 40 left. My question is will they grow on this year to become like the massive ones you can by ?

Good thinking, but nope. They will run to seed as soon as the Sun warms them up. Get them out and into that sandwich ! Cheers, Tony.

Thank Tony well thats a bxxxxr , they are still tasty and not woody.
I think it was you that gave me sound advice about my spring planted onion and garlic crop re earthing up.
I planted twice the amount of onions last sept (about 200 sets) the scapes are as big as the spring onions, this is probably a very daft question. Why dont they go to seed when it gets sunny.?
Scapes are the name for the hardneck garlic flower buds, so I think that you are talking about the leaves of your autumn planted onion sets.
They may be heat treated to prevent them going to seed.
