Hi I have whats left of a lawn following 11.5 years of my dog scratching it up etc. We are looking to rotivate it and grow some veg or should we remove the grass or spray it first?
I should rent out a turf cutter (as sometimes seen in Time Team). Stack the turfs brown to brown and green to green, (although I'm sure someone will disagree with me on that). somewhere unobtrusive and cover them for a few years.
If you rotavate, there is a school of thought that tends to believe you produce a slick surface at the depth of the tines called a hard pan and through this plants have difficulty sending their roots.
I should roll the sleeves up and routh dig, or better still double dig and incorporate as much manure/compoat as you can get your hands on. It is a long arduous task but if you don't cut corners at the start of yout dream, you will reap the benifits later on. Cheers, Tony.
