Hi, This is the second year I have tried to grow some veg from seed. I've had success with peppers, aubergines. However, no success with marrows, courgettes, cucumbers.
The first problem is that some of the seeds have just shot up & are a long whispy 4-5" tall.
The second problem (I had this last year) was when the seeds that did grow "properly" were potted on they seemed to form fairly healthy plants, but when I potted them on further, they just died!!
    Can anyone help me please??

    Thanks.

It could have been 'damping off'. Did the base of the stalk go manky first then collapse? If so, it was damping off. Cheers, Tony.

This is a classic sign that they are suffering from a lack of light and are possibly too warm.

but when I potted them on further, they just died!!

By guess here is they may have been too wet and cold, particularly the cucumbers.

They will have probably suffered from 'neck rot' this generally happens at soil level and is caused by a variation in temperatures.

For example the soil can be relatively warm, the atomosphere may be cooler and the wet compost surface cooler still, these conditions can cause neck rot at this point.

Try placing some grit or perlite on the surface of the compost and this will reduce the extremes in temperature at compost level.

When seedlings are long and whispy, it is usually because they are kept too warm, or they are not getting sufficient all-round light.
Dying after being transplanted could be due to damaging their roots.
It`s not too late to start over again with new seed.

Thanks - I think I'll have to give them another go & follow your advice - I don't think it's too late...

You don't mention where you are but I would say it is still a bit too early to sow cucurbits in the UK.

It will be around a month yet before I sow my cucumber; & Courgettes ( I am in West Yorkshire)

I would say you should wait another two weeks at least, more so if you do not ideal conditions to grow them on.

They do not like fluctuating temperatures and from what I have heard we are going back to the ice age next week smiley - winkeye
