Hello, this is my first Gardening Messageboard posting, so please be gentle as I'm going to ask some daft questions probably!
Last year I grew some carrots in big plastic containers, to start with I put a few seeds in some small pots and after the shoots appeared I transferred them to the plastic containers. They were OK when harvested, but were all twisted. Should I have just put one seed per pot? How many carrots would one seed usually make?
I want to grow some beetroot this year from seed, would the same apply?
Many thanks for any help offered.
Carrots don't transplant well, Simon. Best to direct sow them. Beetroot too.
I do grow beetroot in modules because each seed is a cluster of seeds. I remove some of the seedlings and leave perhaps two or three which I plant out as soon as I can.
One carrot seed will produce one carrot. They do not like to be transplanted so sow direct.
I too, sow beetroot into modules. Thin to one strong seedling, grow on for a bit, then transfer to final place.
Thanks for the advice everyone!
