I was insired by an article in this month's Gardener's World on growing veg in a 1m sqaure plot. I have seen some pvc raised beds that won't rot and and look quite good. I hadn't thought of using pvc or plastic. Has anyone tried them and can compare them to the wood equivelants? Thanks.

I don't see why they would perform any differently to wooden ones, the secret is in getting the growing medium right.I think they are quite expensive, then I am a great believer in improvisation with scavenged bits. Though I appreciate what I do on my allotment might be seen as a bit of an eyesore in a suburban garden! Another option would be to go to a timber merchant and buy sarking. I got enough for three metre square beds and corner posts, cut to size for £22 a couple of years ago. Check out square foot gardening on the web, lots of useful advice.

Yes, I have a 1 metre square Linka-board kit that I use in the garden. Suits me, easy to assemble & I dismantle it at the end of the season & store in shed.

I also have a wooden sided raised bed that OH made buying the wood, which then needed treating etc before it was built. That must be at least 5yrs old & is still fine. Not cheap though if I remember.

You can also get wooden pre-treated kits too btw.

I suppose it depends on which 'look' you want & whether you'll move your veg bit every year in which case the plastic ones would be easier.

In use, cant say any difference. J.

Thanks. I have been surprised how much wood has cost me in the past so it may be as cheap to buy a kit. I think I will give it a go.
