I planted asparagus last year and got several spikes which I let die back. This year there is no sign of any, is it to early or have they died off completely?
Give them time. I've got seven or eight plants, a couple have already produced, others are just starting.
Hi,
I hope I'm not highjacking your thread but I have planted new asparagus crowns a couple of weeks ago. These are my first asparagus. The tips are comming through now. Will I get a crop this year or should I not eat on the first year like Kim?
Cheers
Hi like you I had a good few spears last year and left them as advised. I'm sure It's said that you should not crop asparagus for the first two years and then sparingly in the third year.
Crowns planted this year should be left till next year when you can harvest lightly. This first year is crucial for the plants' development.
Ok
Is it a matter of letting them grow as high as they want and cut back in the winter then?
Cheers
Yes, let them grow. They will produce ferns. They shouldn't get very high in their first year but mature plants can, and can need staking in exposed positions. In late autumn - or early, depending on your climate - you'll see them starting to turn brown as the cold hits them. Let them turn completely brown before cutting them off at just above ground level. I cover mine to about an inch with a mixture of compost and pelleted chook poo for the winter.
