As this year's show - the 39th - gets into full swing, the organisers are promising a show that's the best yet. The age of steam gets temporarily revived and celebrated in the ever-popular annual fair this week, giving visitors an insight into country life back in a time when steam power was in its heyday at the turn of the 20th century. Each year probably the largest collection of steam and vintage equipment to be seen anywhere in the world assembles on fields around Tarrant Hinton, near Blandford.

Steam-powered fairground ride Steam funfairOne of the highlights of the event is the old time steam funfair.听 Annually, over 50 Showman's engines, with their gleaming brass, generate the light and power for the old roundabouts and swingboats to operate - something that's definitely worth catching, especially at night!听 Other popular demonstrations at the fair include steam power threshing, steam ploughing, steam woodsawing and steam road rolling. As well as the steam engines and organs, vintage tractors, vintage cars and motorcycles and army vehicles are on parade.听 Sheila Dibnah, widow of FredOne of the fair's visitors was Sheila Dibnah, widow of the late steam enthusiast and steeplejack Fred, who was best known for his TV programmes about steam and the industrial age. Of her husband, who died in November 2004, Sheila told 大象传媒 Radio Solent: "Fred came down once to The Great Dorset Steam Fair as far as I'm aware but he really enjoyed it - I think the beer tent might have got the better of him! People would come along and say, 'do you want a pint, Fred?'. "Loads of people today have come up to me, and they remember Fred with such fondness. He had this wonderful approachable personality, and everyone thought he was his friend." Listen to Sheila's interview by clicking on the link below.
