Louisa Adjoa Parker

Made in England - in Dorset

As part of the Made in England project, Dorset poet Louise Adjoa Parker is exploring Weymouth, where she's looking for stories to tell.

Louise is a poet and writer living in West Dorset. With a white British mother and Ghanaian father, Louisa writes about her experience as a mixed heritage woman who has lived in South West England for most of her life.

Her poetry explores themes which include her relationship with the local landscape, early experiences of domestic violence and racism, single parenthood, relationships and children. Her autobiographical poetry has been described as 'raw' and 'honest'.

Louisa has also written a book and exhibition on the history of African and Caribbean people in Dorset.

Louisa will be working in Weymouth

She is passionate about social justice and equality, and wants to inspire people to be proud of themselves and their identity, no matter who they are.

Louisa works as a Community Development Worker in mental health (inclusivity for Black and Asian clients). She's also a mum and loves to write.

She keeps her work and creativity separate although says that sometimes issues such as inequality overlap.

Louisa is really looking forward to hearing other people's stories - she believes that "everyone has a story to tell" and loves meeting new people.听

She's also looking forward to getting to know Weymouth better - she mainly works in the Dorchester area and lives in Lyme Regis. She's also relishing the new challenge of writing "flash fiction" - very short-form works constructed quickly - as it's something she's never done before.

Louisa's tip for writing

Her top tip is to write honestly and in plain English - writing should be accessible so that everyone can take something from it: we, the readers, should be able to relate to the experiences it contains.

She can't stand flowery, pretentious, contrived writing. She believes that anyone can "learn" how to write but that you need to have passion and the writing needs to be "real".

Louisa will be exploring Weymouth, searching for tales and stories throughout the rest of March and April.

Email us if you're interested in telling her your tale.
