The film is based on the play of Pyramus and Thisbe from A Midsummer Night's Dream. We chose to do this part of Shakespeare's works as it was able to highlight present day issues effectively and was fun to reconstruct.
We chose to represent the two main characters as male to confront the controversial modern issue of homosexuality. Displaying the wall as characters diminishing the issue of homosexuality introduces the topic as controversial. We decided to use the issue of homosexuality as it is becoming more accepted in British society and therefore seemed like a good issue to give a twist to the play.
The use of the modern characterisation 'emo' brings the film into the present with the homosexual main characters. Modernity was also portrayed by using drugs to kill the characters rather than the original sword which did not fit into the theme of the film. Some of Shakespeare's original characterisation were kept, such as the character names and the use of the lion and moonshine keeping original orientation of the play.
