Watch "A Midsummer Night's Dream"

About this film

Our "performance" of A Midsummer Night's Dream is a culmination of workshops that were held in conjunction with Keith Park from SENSE last year. The script we used is Keith's adaptation of The Dream with some additional verses.

Although a basic storyline of the play is followed, the emphasis is not so much the narrative but the power of Shakespearean poetry. For this reason, the performance uses extracts of original text that are performed in call and response with everyone calling out the final phrase.

For students who are unable to use speech in this intentional way, communication switches are used with works and sound effects and Makaton sign language, to enable them to participate. The idea is to make the poetry and language of Shakespeare accessible to every student, and at the same time have a bit of fun!

This 60 second version shows two extracts performed at the Globe Theatre.

Ella
Great film. I think it's a really imaginative idea to go and perform at the Globe Theatre!

I didn't like this movie. I say this because it didn't teach me anything nor did it seem the least bit interesting. It could've been a lot better. If only the makers put a little more effort into their work. I'm not trying to be mean.I like to think of it as constructive critism. Also, I probably shouldn't be the one criticising. Maybe it is because I'm reading this book and,I don't like it.

It could have been a bit more exciting if you had some costumes, as it was a bit confusing, but it was still quite good!

Sophy
I thought it was enjoyed by all as the words were recited well. The students looked like they were having fun. An experience for them to be on stage and an real opportunity to enjoy, understand and perform Shakespeare. Thankyou for the previlege of watching and listening.

It was a good idea to go to the Globe Theatre for a Shakespeare thing. I couldn't tell what you were saying - good anyway.

Primate
It's a good idea - nice to see everyone getting a chance to take part.
