The vision
| The sun setting over Basildon |
The plan is for 10,700 new homes and 11,000 extra jobs in Basildon District by 2021. The first place money will be spent is within the A127 Enterprise Corridor.听 This is where two thirds of Basildon鈥檚 60,000 person workforce is currently based. The town鈥檚 always sold itself as a good place to do business as it is only 25 miles from London, or 35 minutes by train. The town centre will be completely pulled apart and reshaped and it should all start very soon. Basildon was built as a new town after the Second World War and was at the forefront of the experiment to create a new style of living. However, many people agree times have changed and the centre of the town now needs a serious makeover.

Pitsea is also part of the proposed changes with new homes and jobs coming to the town centre. When is it happening? The development of the Basildon area will take place in phases over the next 20 years, but the district council has already sold some of the contracts to do the work. There should be one million square feet of additional retail, leisure and office floorspace and 3,650 new homes to create a town centre that is also a living community. There has already been a public consultation in Pitsea on the plans for the town centre.
