大象传媒 Essex has discovered in Thurrock, despite about 18,000 new homes planned for the area, there are serious concerns about whether the schools can cope with the growing population.听 Thurrock Council says it needs hundreds of millions of pounds from the government to urgently improve up to eight of its secondary schools.听 So far money has been found to replace only one of them.听 Andy Gordon has been to Thurrock to see the state of the schools in the area.

Within a few years tens of thousands of students will be studying there at the new University of Essex campus and South East Essex College - and it's promised it will transform the town.听 There'll be two new buildings by 2008, including halls of residence, and plans for new sport facilities.听 The big changes are being masterminded by two women - Andy Gordon has spoken to them about their vision.
