Portrait of Nigel Sparrow

Nigel has been a popular face since 1972

Characters on canvas

Maldon artist David Wiseman is helping to celebrate the lives of two of the town's much-loved characters, by capturing them on canvas.

Every town can claim to having at least one 'character' - someone who goes about their life in a different way to most. In Maldon's case they have Nigel Sparrow.

The 75-year-old, who has lived in Maldon since 1972, can often be seen around the town, giving a cheery wave to his beloved buses, or stopping by to have a chat in the local shops and cafes.

Inspired by what people like Nigel brings to the town, local artist David Wiseman has painted his portrait and that of another well-known face, Brian, which are now being displayed around the town.

"I wanted to do portraits of people that are recognisable in my home town, because I do believe that it's people who really make a town what it is," says David.

"They're somewhat of celebrities really - they're always out and about in the town and are very friendly people."

David's portraits are currently hanging in the town's m.deli shop and will also feature in both the Burnham and Maldon Art Trails later this year.

"Nigel likes to go out in front of buses and stop them in the road, so I've incorporated that in the picture by having the bus stop in the picture"

"Nigel heard about the picture I did with Brian and he was very keen for me to do a picture of him," he explains.

"So I asked to take some photographs of him just for reference and he was very kind to pose for me just by the side of the road - just by the bus stop.

"Nigel likes to go out in front of buses and stop them in the road, so I've kind of incorporated that by having the bus stop in the picture.

"It's come out well. It is always a bit of a struggle and a challenge to produce a picture that is photo-realistic - it has got that quality about it, particularly on his face. So yes I'm pleased."

And what does the subject think of his portrait?

"I like it very much. Honestly. I think he's a wonderful lad to do it," says Nigel.

"I am a bit of a clown, I make them laugh," he adds.

"Yes, you get one or two miserable ones, but you're bound to put up with that. But the majority of them are lovely - they can see the funny side of things."

You can see the painting, along with other work by David at m.deli until 13, June.
