Concert Information
Rising star Ben Gernon starts a week of concerts with the orchestra – opening with a live ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 3 broadcast from MediaCityUK.
Bringing a warm conclusion to a cold January, Bridge’s balmy tone poem, Summer, paints today’s programme in seasonal colours; before Walton’s dazzling Violin Concerto is brought to life by Alexandra Wood, one of the most dynamic and versatile violinists of her generation.
From Mancunian composer Foulds, we hear a rarely heard overture and a delightful example of his lighter style. Overture Le Cabaret fizzes along with breezy jollity and this quintessentially English piece puts Foulds in the role of entertainer.
Closing this afternoon is Arnold’s Electra – a one-act score from an exciting and dark ballet. Electra is powerfully impressive, tragically compelling and brings light and shadow in equal measures.
This concert is a live broadcast for ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 3.
