Concert information
鈥淭he whole world was like a great bow, stretching from north to south鈥. As the 16-year old Carl Nielsen took the ferry from his island home to a new musical life in Copenhagen, he remembered that 鈥渆verything seemed to swell within me鈥. He never lost that youthful sense of energy, of optimism, of life. It pulses in every bar of his soaring Sinfonia espansiva, and yells and leaps through his typically quirky (but hugely entertaining) Violin Concerto, music rooted in Nielsen鈥檚 working-class rural childhood. Thomas Dausgaard feels passionately about this composer and he鈥檚 assembled a team of outstanding young soloists, plus Denmark鈥檚 leading string quartet, to dig deep into this wonderful music.
(approximate finish time: 5.30pm)
Please Note: there will be two intervals of approximately 20 minutes each.
During the intervals students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland will perform chamber music by Nielsen: 'Canto Serioso', for horn and piano; 'Fantasy Piece' for clarinet and piano - and 'Five Piano Pieces, Op.3'.
Post-Concert Coda (approx. 5 minutes after the main concert has finished): Nielsen, String Quartet No.1 in G minor, played by the Danish String Quartet.
The main concert and post-concert coda will be recorded for future broadcast on 大象传媒 Radio 3.
