42 Strings & Avaes Mohammed
Poet, writer and performer Avaes Mohammad engages with themes of science, the socio-political and spirituality. His upbringing reverberated with the Sufi Saints of South Asia as much as the Dub Poets of Jamaica; influences that have left a permanent hue from which he experiences the sacred and profane alike.
42 Strings is the collaboration between zheng player Muqi Li and korist Althea SullyCole, who are currently based in London. The pair met at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in the fall of 2015. When Li and SullyCole began their collaboration, they never imagined it would lead to the discovery of a shared musical philosophy in their chance meeting. Their performances consist primarily of original compositions, with the occasional incorporation of a traditional West African or Chinese tune. They hope to spread a greater appreciation for instruments rarely found on western stages and start conversations about cultural exchange, authenticity and ownership with their music.
