Mendelssohn鈥檚 magnificent Violin Concerto is the epitome of musical Romanticism 鈥� and with rising-star virtuoso Alina Pogostkina joining the orchestra tonight, it鈥檚 in excellent hands. The 1845 premiere was conducted by Danish composer Niels Gade, whose touching First Symphony precedes it on the programme. Before John Storg氓rds ends with Sibelius鈥檚 haunting Seventh Symphony, he鈥檒l be bringing us Webern鈥檚 colourful arrangement of the Ricercare a 6 from Bach鈥檚 Musical Offering, described by the pianist Charles Rosen as 'among the greatest achievements of Western European civilisation.'
