Imagine...an intoxicating combination of Eastern and Western traditions creates musical magic
In December last year, we were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Zakir Hussain. A legendary tabla virtuoso, global ambassador of Indian classical music and four-time GRAMMY winner, Hussain’s extraordinary legacy inspires musicians and music lovers around the world. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends and fans across the globe.
We are hugely honoured that Zakir’s brother and tabla player, Fazal Qureshi, will perform as soloist in the ý SSO’s upcoming concerts in Glasgow and Aberdeen. Alongside soloists Niladri Kumar (sitar) and Rakesh Chaurasia (bansuri), Fazal will perform Hussain’s own ‘Triple Concerto for Tabla, Sitar and Bansuri’, conducted by Alpesh Chauhan.
Hussain described his composition as “a tale of love, tradition, and the transforming power of art.” Our performances will be a heartfelt celebration of Zakir’s life and music, and we look forward to sharing this tribute with our audiences across Scotland and on ý Radio 3.
The concert programme remains as originally advertised:
Zakir Hussain - Triple Concerto for Tabla, Sitar and Bansuri
Sergey Rachmaninov - The Isle of the Dead
Igor Stravinsky - The Firebird – 1919 Suite
