Concert Information

Today, the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Philharmonic welcomes final year students from the RNCM’s two-year Postgraduate Conducting programme. This is an unrivalled opportunity for them to conduct a professional broadcast orchestra as part of their final assessment.

Across two concerts on 26 April, we’ll hear from four of the most exciting young musicians on the cusp of their international careers, as they showcase their talent. (For details of the 4.15pm concert please go to the next event in this series).

In this, the first concert of the day starting at 11.45am, we hear from Lauren Wazynczuk, conductor and Marcus Vinícius de Oliveira, double bass.

Lauren Wazynczuk conducts Valeria Coleman’s Umoja: Anthem of Unity and for his debut as a soloist in the UK, Marcus Vinícius de Oliveira performs Andres Martin’s Double Bass Concerto No. 1, the British premiere of the work.

Artist Biographies

Lauren Wazynczuk
Lauren's (2nd year Masters) unique career path to conducting has already spanned many octaves in music including performance, administration, music education and outreach, operations, development, marketing, artistic and technical direction. As a conductor, she has worked with youth to professionals in a variety of settings including wind band, symphony orchestra, opera and choral ensembles in the United States, Europe and United Kingdom. A collaborative and charismatic artist, she is most passionate about building culturally diverse bridges through the arts, connecting communities. Since moving to Manchester in October 2021, as part of her studies she has assisted the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Psappha, Opera North and worked as Cover/Assistant Conductor for Northern Ballet’s production, The Great Gatsby directed and choreographed by David Nixon OBE with music by Richard Rodney Bennett.

Marcus Vinícius de Oliveira

Born in Brazil, Marcus began learning the double bass at the age of 15 and since 2018 has been studying at the Royal Northern College of Music with the renowned double bassist Jiří Hudec.

In 2017, Marcus was awarded the VI Ernâni de Almeida Machado Meyer prize by the São Paulo State Youth Symphony Orchestra as their Young Musician of the Year. In 2020, he was a prize winner in the DoContra International Double Bass Competition and in 2021 he was awarded the Thomas Jellis Bequest Award. More recent achievements include the ABRSM Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Award, the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation’s Tuition Assistance Scholarship Award and the RNCM Concerto Competition.

Since 2021, Marcus has been collaborating with several professional orchestras in the UK and abroad including the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hallé Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2022, Marcus was the first Brazilian musician to complete the Professional Experience Scheme with the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Philharmonic Orchestra.

This British premiére of Andrés Martin’s Double Bass Concerto No 1 with the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Philharmonic is Marcus’ debut as a soloist in the UK.
