Born in the shadow of one of Russia鈥檚 darkest hours, Shostakovich carried the ghosts of the revolution with him. They are given voice in a Prom that brings together solo-piano Preludes and Fugues with choral settings of poems revolutionary poets.

About This Event

鈥極ur family discussed the Revolution of 1905 constantly 鈥� The stories deeply affected my imagination.鈥� Born in the shadow of one of Russia鈥檚 darkest hours 鈥� the slaughter of over 1,000 peaceful protesters outside the Winter Palace in St Petersburg 鈥� Shostakovich carried its ghosts with him throughout his life. They are given voice here in a concert that brings together the wordless songs of the composer鈥檚 Preludes and Fugues with the more explicit homage of the Ten Poems on Texts by Revolutionary Poets.

In the last of its three appearances this season, the Latvian Radio Choir is joined by Russian pianist Alexander Melnikov.
