Programme

Concert information

The first orchestral concert opens with the elegant poise of Panufnik鈥檚 tongue-in-cheek arrangement of string trios written by fellow Polish exile Feliks Janiewicz (who lived and is buried in Edinburgh), which finds a perfect partner in Mozart鈥檚 famous 鈥榤usical joke鈥. Alexander Sitkovetsky is the soloist in the Violin Concerto, originally written for Menuhin, and a work of direct lyricism rather than virtuoso pyrotechnics. The eerie Lullaby is followed by Panufnik鈥檚 earliest surviving symphony, Sinfonia Rustica, a work peppered with folk music and warm, jazz tones, which was condemned by the Soviet regime at its premiere in 1949.
