Principal Guest Conductor John Storgårds opens today’s programme with Grieg’s gentle Lyric Suite. An orchestration of four of his most popular Lyric Pieces, Grieg’s Suite is ripe with delicate textures -and this utterly delightful musical miniature certainly reinforces his gift for sound-painting.

The grit and astringency of Vaughan Williams’s Sixth Symphony follows. Noteworthy for its unusually discordant harmonic language, no-one expected the sheer, explosive force of his astonishing Sixth and, 70 years on, this firestorm of a symphony still leaves listeners reeling.
