About This Event
Every piece of music makes its own world. Shostakovich faced the terror of Stalin’s Russia and composed a symphony that echoed down the twentieth century. The young Benjamin Britten set out to impress with a Piano Concerto that plays fabulous games with light and shade. Elizabeth Ogonek, meanwhile, simply gazed into a moonlit sky – and heard sounds of unforgettable enchantment.
That’s just the starting point for this concert with two popular guests of the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Symphony Orchestra. Pianist Benjamin Grosvenor is a Proms favourite – the perfect interpreter for Britten’s pre-War showpiece. Elim Chan, meanwhile, is simply one of the most sought-after conductors of our times. She gave the world premiere of Moondog; expect her to drive straight to the dark heart of Shostakovich’s monumental symphony, too.
