Beethoven 鈥 Symphony No. 3, 鈥楨roica鈥
19:30
Thu 6 Feb 2020
The Bridgewater Hall, Manchester
The first of five concerts celebrating 250 years since Beethoven鈥檚 birth gets right to the point with a landmark in Western music history. If the composer鈥檚 genius can be captured by just a single piece, it鈥檚 the indelible, incredible 鈥楨roica鈥 鈥 completed when he was just 33, written in honour of Napoleon (Beethoven later lost his nerve and deleted the dedication) and regularly voted the greatest symphony of all time.It鈥檚 joined tonight by two relative rarities: 'Opferlied', an almost casually brilliant piece of choral writing, and extracts from 'The Creatures of Prometheus', Beethoven鈥檚 only full-length ballet.
