While some of the artists appearing at this year’s Big Weekend had practically only just starting making music before the big hits arrived, Lower Than Atlantis have taken their time, patiently honing their tools to a sharp edge over the course of four albums, each one a step up from the last.
Formed in Watford in 2007, Mike Duce, Ben Sansom, Declan Hart and Eddy Thrower were originally drawn to the brutal energy of hardcore punk, but slowly began to incorporate slower, deeper post-hardcore riffs and alt-rock melodies once they started recording their ideas. This open-minded approach—as well as a ton of festival appearances—began to attract attention, especially from the rock press (and Zane Lowe, of course), all dazzled by their second album, 2012's World Record. The follow-up Changing Tune was the band’s sole release on Island records, helping them build up more support, and then last year (Mike and Eddy having assisted in the launch of 5 Seconds of Summer), the band signed to Sony Records and released Lower Than Atlantis, their most successful album to date, and Rocksound’s favourite of 2014.
