She’s gold, gowns and glamour. Champagne, charisma and chic. Savoir faire, style and showbiz.
The buzzwords have been tripping off our tongues for decades, but there can never be enough of them to sum up an artist who defines the word superstar.
One of Great Britain’s greatest-ever entertainers has been having a love affair with her public for 60 years. She’s sung for Presidents, Queens and secret agents, hung out with a King, packed concert halls across the known world and sold an estimated 135 million records in the process.
Born in Cardiff in what is now known as Tiger Bay, Dame Shirley Basseys career rapidly grew to a level of international acclaim. She released her first single, 'Burn My Candle' at the precious age of 19, followed by her hit 'Banana Boat Song'. Her worldwide reach came after recording 'Goldfinger' for the 1964 James Bond movie of the same name. 'Diamonds Are Forever' and 'Moonraker' followed. These Bond songs along with her interpretations of numbers like 'Big Spender' & 'I Am What I Am' have made her career an unmitigated success.
In 2000, Dame Shirley was made a DBE, a mark of distinction in a career that has spanned over 60 years in showbiz! In a world where true legends of entertainment are an endangered phenomenon, Dame Shirley sparkles bright.
