The Iceland Symphony Orchestra makes its Proms debut with works by two homegrown composers, both inspired by Iceland鈥檚 geology. The slow-growing, primal force of Leifs鈥檚 Geysir is balanced by the shifting tectonics of T贸masson鈥檚 Magma. Jonathan Biss joins the orchestra for Schumann鈥檚 Piano Concerto, and the concert closes with Beethoven鈥檚 dramatic Fifth Symphony.

About this event

Ilan Volkov directs the Iceland Symphony Orchestra (of which he is Music Director) in the ensemble鈥檚 Proms debut. Together they bring works from two major Icelandic composers, both inspired by the power and drama of their native country鈥檚 geology. There鈥檚 a slow-growing, primal force to Leifs鈥檚 Geysir that balances the shifting tectonics of T贸masson鈥檚 Magma.

Jonathan Biss makes his second appearance this season with Schumann鈥檚 Piano Concerto, written for the composer鈥檚 wife Clara, and the concert closes with Beethoven鈥檚 Fifth Symphony, whose darkness-to-light scenario culminates in a blaze of glory.
