About This Event
Book your free ticket for this chance to experience a live performance of Sir Michael Tippett’s space-age fairytale opera New Year. The ´óÏó´«Ã½ Scottish Symphony Orchestra, ´óÏó´«Ã½ Singers and an internationally-renowned team of solo singers assemble to record a live, public performance of the complete opera, marking 35 years of NMC Recordings and its support of great titans of British contemporary music.
Two worlds collide in Tippet’s New Year as a visitor from the future (‘Nowhere Tomorrow’) helps the central reclusive character escape from their personal fears and fantasies, and embrace the frightening urban realities of ‘Somewhere Today’. The wildest and most open of Tippett’s operas, completed when the composer was aged 83, its influences veer from opera to rock musical, pop song, spoken dialogue, joke and dance.
The concert is preceded by a discussion at 6.45pm in the Recital Room with Oliver Soden, Author of Michael Tippett: The Biography and Sally Groves, a friend and colleague of Michael Tippett, in her former role as Creative Director of Schott Music. This panel is presented by Kate Molleson. Please note there is limited capacity for the panel discussion and entry is on a first come, first served basis.
FREE but ticketed. Limited to 4 tickets per application.
