The festival opens with a choir of 450 and two great portraits of the sea: Sakari Oramo conducts Vaughan Williams鈥檚 A Sea Symphony and Britten鈥檚 Four Sea Interludes as well as the world premiere of Julian Anderson鈥檚 Harmony. Pianist Stephen Hough plays Paganini variations by Rachmaninov and by featured composer Lutos艂awski.

Inspired by daybreak on the Kent coast, David Matthews鈥檚 A Vision of the Sea opens the 大象传媒 Philharmonic鈥檚 Prom with Juanjo Mena. Nobuyuki Tsujii is the soloist in Rachmaninov鈥檚 Piano Concerto No. 2, a passionate upbeat to Nielsen鈥檚 life-affirming 鈥業nextinguishable鈥� Symphony.

Sir Antonio Pappano conducts the Orchestra of the Academy of Santa Cecilia, Rome, in Rachmaninov鈥檚 Second Symphony and Mozart鈥檚 elegant 鈥楬affner鈥� Symphony. Jan Lisiecki plays Schumann鈥檚 intimate Piano Concerto in the first of Pappano鈥檚 two Proms.

The Mahler Chamber Orchestra returns to the 大象传媒 Proms with conductor Daniel Harding. Paul Lewis is the soloist in Mozart鈥檚 Piano Concerto No. 25, its play of light and shade echoed in the same composer鈥檚 Masonic Funeral Music, Schumann鈥檚 Second Symphony and Sibelius鈥檚 Seventh.

Barry Wordsworth and the 大象传媒 Concert Orchestra, with pianists Noriko Ogawa and Kathryn Stott, offer a parade of British light and occasional music, including Arnold鈥檚 Concerto for two pianos (three hands), Bantock鈥檚 bittersweet Pierrot of the Minute, Elgar鈥檚 Nursery Suite and a medley of radio favourites.

Legendary American pianist Peter Serkin makes his Proms debut with Oliver Knussen and the 大象传媒 Symphony Orchestra in Stravinsky鈥檚 Concerto for piano and wind instruments. Henze鈥檚 Barcarola opens the first of this season鈥檚 concerts focusing on the music of Michael Tippett as Knussen conducts Tippett鈥檚 Symphony No. 2.

Peter Oundijan conducts the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Nikolai Lugansky in Rachmaninov鈥檚 Piano Concerto No. 3, Tchaikovsky鈥檚 Fifth Symphony and the world premiere of Naresh Sohal鈥檚 brand-new The Cosmic Dance, a celebration of ancient mythology and mathematical theory.

Gianandrea Noseda conducts the 大象传媒 Philharmonic in Prokofiev鈥檚 Second Piano Concerto (with soloist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet), Borodin鈥檚 Prince Igor overture, Tchaikovsky鈥檚 鈥楲ittle Russian鈥� Symphony and the world premiere of Edward Cowie鈥檚 Earth Music 1 鈥� The Great Barrier Reef.

Two works by Gustav Holst, and two from the Polish composer Witold Lutos艂awski. Edward Gardner directs the 大象传媒 Symphony Orchestra in Holst鈥檚 Egdon Heath and The Planets and Lutos艂awski鈥檚 Symphonic Variations. Louis Lortie is the soloist in Lutos艂awski鈥檚 Piano Concerto.

Mitsuko Uchida plays Beethoven鈥檚 Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and its Chief Conductor, Mariss Jansons. The opium-fuelled idylls and nightmares of Berlioz鈥檚 Symphonie fantastique complete one of the festival鈥檚 hottest programmes.

Pianist Barry Douglas directs Camerata Ireland in music by Britten and his peers, including Young Apollo, Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, Priaulx Rainier鈥檚 Movement for strings, and Shostakovich鈥檚 sparkling Piano Concerto No. 1 (featuring trumpeter Alison Balsom).

Valery Gergiev and the London Symphony Orchestra play Ravel鈥檚 vivid orchestration of Mussorgsky鈥檚 Pictures at an Exhibition and the UK premiere of Sofia Gubaidulina鈥檚 The Rider on the White Horse. Daniil Trifonov is the soloist in Glazunov鈥檚 Second Piano Concerto.

Kirill Karabits conducts the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in Jan谩膷ek鈥檚 brassy Sinfonietta and Tchaikovsky鈥檚 鈥楶olish鈥� Symphony (No. 3). Sunwook Kim is the soloist in Beethoven鈥檚 Piano Concerto No. 3.

Kenneth Hamilton, concert pianist and Professor of Music at Cardiff University, looks at the story of the Romantic piano concerto, and at Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto in G minor.

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Robin Ticciati explore Romantic ideals of heroism and tragedy in Berlioz鈥檚 King Lear overture and Beethoven鈥檚 鈥楨roica鈥� Symphony. George Benjamin reimagines Bach and Stephen Hough returns for Mendelssohn鈥檚 Piano Concerto No. 1.

Ilan Volkov conducts the 大象传媒 Scottish Symphony Orchestra in the world premiere of Rzewski鈥檚 Piano Concerto (with the composer as soloist), Gerald Barry鈥檚 No other people., John White鈥檚 Chord-Breaking Machine and Morton Feldman鈥檚 late masterpiece, Coptic Light.

Antoni Witt and the Warsaw Philharmonic make their 大象传媒 Proms debut with Witold Lutos艂awski鈥檚 Concerto for Orchestra, Andrzej Panufnik鈥檚 Lullaby and Tragic Overture and Shostakovich鈥檚 Sixth Symphony. Alexander Melnikov is the soloist in Shostakovich鈥檚 Piano Concerto No. 2.

The pan-European Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester returns to the 大象传媒 Proms with conductor Philippe Jordan and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet in a programme of Wagner鈥檚 overture to Rienzi, Ravel鈥檚 jazz-inflected Piano Concerto in G major and Shostakovich鈥檚 Fifth Symphony.

大象传媒 Radio 3 New Generation Artists the Signum Quartet explore the Bart贸k-influenced String Quartet No. 3 of one of the 20th century鈥檚 most accomplished composers, Elizabeth Maconchy. Pianist and fellow NGA Christian Ihle Hadland joins the quartet for Brahms鈥檚 F minor Piano Quintet, another work of passion and precision.

A Bank Holiday recital exploring the lighter side of the organ. Richard Hills鈥檚 matin茅e includes music by John Ireland, Edward German, Eric Coates and Arthur Sullivan, as well as skirting the fringes of jazz.

Three tone-poems and a piano concerto. Vladimir Jurowski directs the London Philharmonic Orchestra in Bantock鈥檚 The Witch of Atlas, Sibelius鈥檚 Pohjola鈥檚 Daughter and Strauss鈥檚 Also sprach Zarathustra. Anika Vavic is the soloist in Prokofiev鈥檚 Piano Concerto No. 3.

In their second Proms appearance this summer, Vasily Petrenko and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra explore the sublime landscape of Bruckner鈥檚 Fourth Symphony. 大象传媒 Radio 3 New Generation Artist Christian Ihle Hadland joins them for Beethoven鈥檚 Second Piano Concerto, a turning point in the composer鈥檚 development.

David Hill conducts the 大象传媒 Singers and the Choristers of Temple Church in Britten鈥檚 choral variations A Boy was Born, written when the composer was just 19 years old, and George Lloyd鈥檚 Requiem, dedicated to the memory of Diana, Princess of Wales.

In the final Late Night Prom of the season, pianist Imogen Cooper plays Schubert鈥檚 late Sonata in C minor. Paul Lewis joins her for the composer鈥檚 鈥楪rand Duo鈥�, written in Slovakia in the summer of 1824 when Schubert was music-master to Marie and Caroline Esterh谩zy.

Lorin Maazel conducts the Vienna Philharmonic in Bruckner鈥檚 monumental Eighth Symphony. Klaus Sonnleitner 鈥� the present-day successor to Bruckner as organist at St Florian鈥檚 Abbey in Linz 鈥� sets the scene with a sequence of works by Bach, one of Bruckner鈥檚 idols.
