Die Hard With a Vengeance DVD (1995)

Part three of the unluckiest man-in-a-vest action trilogy sees Bruce Willis team up with super cool Samuel L Jackson, in a movie that is very much for the big screen only. On video, the impact of the effects is lost to the threadbare script. Thankfully, this transfer to DVD restores enough of the 'wham' and the 'thank you ma'am' to make this film enjoyable once again.

Everything about the film is big scale. Aurally, you have a thundering orchestral score that separates beautifully around the speakers. Clearly fearing that an orchestra is not enough to keep people interested, a whole host of sub-woofer pleasing explosions are there for your neighbours to enjoy. Other highlights includes a derailed subway train that should lodge into your rear speakers in chapter nine and a circling helicopter in 29.

Visually it's enough to say that the transfer is sharp throughout. But one side effect to a digital picture is that they bring out any flaws in CGI that VHS tends to smooth out. Witness Bruce surfing on top of a truck on a giant wall of water in chapter 19 and it's embarrassingly clear that Willis is being filmed against a blue screen (undoubtedly with a latte in near reach). Maybe that's just churlish, but then critics are meant to suck the fun out of your favourite blockbuster.
