While Hollywood remains an increasingly ageist community when it comes to women, blokes seem to get off a bit easier. Think Harrison Ford, Sean Connery, Michael Douglas - and Clint Eastwood.
Yes, ol' rawhide himself is still enjoying a healthy showbiz career as both actor and director, despite his advancing years. And he's finally decided that today's movies shouldn't be all nubile young things, instead calling on some equally mature mates to play the Space Cowboys.
The plot is (pardon the pun) an age-old one: a piece of technology, this time an ancient satellite, goes awry and the only person who can fix it is Frank Corvin (Eastwood, 70), the man who designed it. After striking a deal with his NASA nemesis (James Cromwell), he gathers together his old team of test pilots - Hawk Hawkins (Jones, 54), Tank Sullivan (Garner, 72) and Jerry O'Neill (Sutherland, 66) - for their belated chance to become astronauts.
From here the film splits into two halves: first the training and then the expedition. The former is undoubtedly the most entertaining, as you watch the men forgoing their bus passes for jogging and enjoying the 'Right Stuff' lifestyle once again. The slightly less ancient Jones, doing his happy-go-lucky routine, even finds time for a romance with a plucky scientist (Marcia Gay Harden).
Once they blast off though, it becomes rather too familiar and the ending is a shambles. That said, there's plenty to enjoy, particularly the performances, which feature enviable natural chemistry between the leads and a movie-stealing turn by Sutherland as the libidinous O'Neill.
